First question: Do you brush every day? Second question: Are you using the right technique? Keeping up with a healthy oral routine by brushing twice a day, every day is crucial for maintaining a beautiful smile. However, it’s also important that you’re doing so in the right way. Yes, there is a right way! Here’s what you need to know about proper teeth-brushing technique.

The Right Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth correctly means starting out with the right supplies. You should be using a soft-bristled toothbrush. Harder material may end up doing damage to your enamel. It’s up to you if you want to use a manual or an electric toothbrush, but many patients find that it’s easier for them to get a better clean with an electric one.

The Right Toothpaste

When using toothpaste, use just a pea-sized amount of toothpaste with fluoride. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps strengthen teeth. If you want recommendations for toothpaste, ask your dentist or look for ones with a seal of acceptance from the American Dental Association.

The Right Movement

When brushing your teeth, keep the brush at a 45-degree angle to your gums. Move the brush gently back and forth across all surfaces of the tooth. This includes the inner, outer, and chewing surfaces. You should move the brush in short strokes.

The Right Amount of Time

You should be brushing your teeth for at least two minutes each time. If you’ve never timed yourself, that can seem like quite a long time but it’s important for getting a thorough clean. We recommend setting a timer until you get the hang of it! Or choose a song to play while you brush.
